Bowen Therapy

With Nicole Becker

... Also known as Neurostructural Integration, Bowen Therapy is a pillar of Balance Bodywork.

Based on the work of Australian genius Tom Bowen of Geelong, your treatment consists of receiving a series of rolling moves at precise locations on the body, providing input to the nervous system which allows your body to align and heal itself.

Unlike massage, no oil is used, and the light to moderate moves that speak to the nervous system can be done through light clothing. Results can be seen, felt and measured from the first session.

How does Bowen Therapy work?

Bowen therapy targets the nervous system, triggering a the body's self-healing and self-realignment in response. Fascia and muscles release, scar tissue may dissolve, and energy flow is restored which improves mobility, reduces pain, and enhances your overall well-being. Results can be seen, felt and measured from the very first session.

Is Bowen Therapy Painful?

No, Bowen therapy is generally not painful. The moves applied during the session are gentle and do not involve forceful manipulation or high velocity thrust.

Clients often report feeling relaxed during and after the session. Bowen is known for its gentleness, making it suitable for individuals who may be sensitive to more intense forms of bodywork such as infants or the elderly.

However! Problem areas can often be sensitive particularly after a long period without treatment.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

Ideally, be well hydrated and plan an easy day afterwards with lots of gentle movement and not too much sitting or strenuous activity, with a nap or early bedtime if you can.

Do:

Wear thin and/or loose clothing,

Be well hydrated,

Please be on time or a little bit early to discuss any areas of focus during the session.

Don't:

Do not wear heavy odours - extremely light to no fragrance please.

For your own comfort, Avoid heavy meals before your session.

Remember, Bowen therapy is gentle, and the practitioner will guide you through the session.

How often should I have Bowen Therapy?

Sessions are usually 7 days apart.

The average person only needs 2-3 sessions to achieve lasting pain relief, mobility and strength. Others, particularly with demanding jobs or poor health, benefit from a regular scheduled appointment at intervals tailored to the individual, perhaps every 3-6 weeks.

Follow up care as needed, with fitter and or younger people often going for months or even years between appointments.

What are the health benefits of casual Bowen Therapy?

Muscular imbalances or “knots” use up a large amount of the body’s oxygen and nutritional reserves, so eliminating these will effectively give the body its own energy back. There is a natural anti anxiety and antidepressant effect.

Bowen Therapy will keep your posture and body alignment in optimal position, helping keep you energized, physically balanced, and mentally well.

Bowen Therapy is also a proactive approach to injury prevention and preventative wellness care in general.

Will this enhance my sporting performance?

Many athletes around the world are maximising co-ordination, strength and flexibility and minimising risk of injury with this therapy. To use Bowen Therapy as a performance enhancement it is suggested to have a treatment two days before an event, after having enough sessions prior to that to resolve all major problems, and establish symmetry in the body.

To further support your athletic performance and confidence mindset it may be of benefit to also use kinesiology to support subconscious programming for success.

Can this help my anxiety or depression?

Bowen Therapy can often be a big help in this area. If there is misalignment of the jaw or coccyx it can irritate the nervous system and brain, causing anxiety or imbalance of brain chemistry. After these physical causes are ruled out or resolved, any remaining emotional stress can be addressed with other approaches offered.

What conditions respond to this type of therapy?

Bowen therapy is used to address a variety of conditions, including musculoskeletal issues (e.g., back pain, neck pain), headaches, neck pain, sports injuries, chronic pain, stress-related problems, and emotional well-being. While individual responses vary, many people report positive outcomes in terms of pain reduction, improved mobility, and a sense of relaxation.

A detailed list of benefits.

1. Pain Relief: fast effective relief from muscular pain is Bowen therapy's main action.

2. Improved Flexibility: Bowen therapy will increase your flexibility and range of motion by resolving muscular tightness.

3. Relaxation: There is usually a sense of deep relaxation during and after Bowen therapy sessions as the body goes out of "sympathetic dominance" (aka STRESS) and into "parasympathetic dominance" (Healing mode).

4. Stress Reduction: Bowen therapy helps balance the nervous and hormonal system, reducing stress hormones.

5. Enhanced Circulation: Bowen therapy stimulates lymphatic drainage and blood flow, improving circulation throughout the body.

6. Better Sleep Quality: Many of my client report improved sleep patterns and better quality of sleep after a session.

7. Muscle Tension Release: After treatments there is reduction in muscular pain, stiffness and discomfort. Flexibility and strength are improved as a result.

8. Faster Recovery from Injuries: By promoting bloodflow, there will be enhanced recovery and repair from sports injuries or accidents.

9. Balanced Energy Flow: Bowen therapy helps balance the body's energy flow, promoting overall well-being.

10. Headache and Migraine Relief: Most chronic headaches and migraines which involve the neck and jaw respond well.

11. Improved Posture: Clients often comment that they can "stand up straighter" and hold themselves differently after a treatment.

12. Enhanced Lymphatic Drainage: Stimulates the lymphatic system, aiding in detoxification and reducing swelling. We are aware of a nurse bowen therapist working in a lymphatic ward of a hospital who measures litres of fluid moving out of areas after bowen treatment.

13. Emotional Well-being: Bowen therapy supports emotional well-being via initiating the parasympathetic response (healing mode, rest and digest).

14. Support for Digestive Issues: Some people report improvements in digestion through Bowen therapy. Jaw misalignment and tight back muscles can impact digestion.

15. Increased Energy Levels: Regular sessions contribute to increased vitality and energy levels by eliminating or reducing dysfuntional muscular tightness that was draining your reserves by using oxygen and nutrients.

16. Fibromyalgia Symptom Relief: Conditions of this type usually experience improvement.

17. Support for Other Conditions: Individuals with varied issues may find relief, as Bowen therapy aims to balance many systems of the body, potentially improving overall function as you free up your energy.

18. Enhanced Sports Performance: Athletes often use Bowen therapy to support their performance, reduce the risk of injuries, and accelerate recovery.

19. Calming the Nervous System: By initiating a parasympathetic response (healing, rest and digest mode), Bowen promotes a state of relaxation.

20. Overall Wellness: Bowen Therapy can significantly enhance the quality of day-to-day life by reducing the burdens we carry on a physical and nonphysical level.

Individual responses to Bowen therapy can vary.
